Lighting!!!

What's Up Chat, Today I will be discussing the element of light in my group project. Lighting is an important aspect of filming as it contributes to the overall atmosphere and mood of the project. Having a low key may give the movie a tense, creepy mood due to the shadows and darkness of the environment. Moreover, we use lighting in our project to help represent the mood and psychology behind our character.

Lighting: To begin, the lighting we used in our project is Natural lighting. We film earlier in the day around 2-4 P.M to get the sun in the perfect position to where it shines in Courtney's room and illuminates her room to where we can film shots with good lighting. We try to stray away from using artificial light and key light. The picture above is an example of how the natural light reflects on the characters and illuminates her brown skin making it pop. We find this lighting to be the best lighting to illustrate the mood and personality of our character. She is an upbeat, airhead teenage girl and me and my group felt that using natural light would help illustrate our mis-en-scene the best. Although for some scenes the sun started to go down and Courtney's room began to dim. This left us with a dark grey room, which is not the mood we are going for when presenting our main character. Due to these factors we had to use key light from our phone camera in order to illuminate the scenes. Ultimately, this is one of if not the biggest challenge we face when filming our project as being on a time crunch with the sun going down is very hard to manage. We can't do anything about this issue besides plan our film time better and take advantage of the sunlight. I believe if we had a bigger budget, we could use Three Point Lighting and have 3 different light sources to better illuminate our film area. This would help reduce the time crunch we have when filming and help overcome our biggest challenge when filming.
